SIMPLE LIVING ROOM DESIGN: DEFINED FOCAL WALL

DESIGN PROJECT: CREEK SHOALS RESIDENCE

DESIGN PROJECT LOCATION: SIMPSONVILLE, SC

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO: KCL-IDESIGN, LLC

PRINCIPAL DESIGNER: KIMBERLY C. LYONS

PROJECT GOAL: Incorporate a dominant wall/exclude wall with a TV and fireplace.

PROJECT OUTCOME: Warm and inviting family room.

The decision to incorporate and define a dominant focal wall can be explosive when dealing with clients who prefer to paint only some of the interior space. With this design project, the client was uncomfortable with a decorative coating on all the walls in her family room, but she knew she wanted to make a statement with color. I always get overly excited about painting with such an exceptional finish. With that said, it is still about what the client envisions. As a designer, my job is to ensure that every client's vision for their home is in place. It is aesthetically pleasing and functional and meets all the client's needs.

Quick Notation: The client leaned towards orange and needed it to be the perfect shade. Knowing this, I made sure that I picked something in the middle. The room would still be open, inviting, and warm. Whether working with a simple or a complicated color palette, I am passionate about making sure it works great in a room – it must bring everything together cohesively, and the atmosphere must evoke that it is a precise fit. However, after the space's focal wall (backdrop) was in place, it was time to ensure that all elements transitioned in an orderly manner.

Moreover, I am always impressed when simple accents can easily revamp existing furniture. The client's new furniture arrangement helps with easy maneuvering throughout the space. The custom bookshelves display items purchased during the client's military travels and add intricate details. Decorative pillows, window coverings, an area rug, and unique objects add additional splashes of color that fit perfectly within the newly designed space.
