DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: My home's style says a lot about who I am, and therefore, the design is always an honest, authentic, and accurate reflection of who occupies the space.

Okay, by now whomever I have encountered over the years, should already know that my actual DNA is a mixture of extreme bold colors. However, it is hilarious because when I am in a discussion dealing with this extraordinary element; of course, I get asked on how I feel about neutral or white color palettes? In my defense, I have designed a lot of them, and besides as a designer, if I am dealing with a client that has no desire for anything extreme when dealing with color, it is my job to make sure that I give them precisely what they envision for their home. What can I say? It is my job, and I am damn good at it. Moreover, I do post about interiors that are neutral because as a designer I cater to all, and I do understand that everyone is not like me – Kimberly C. Lyons, who could not live in a house that is not screaming some major drama!

Furthermore, since I deal with a variety of clients, I do understand why I cannot post only about bold interiors. So, I started A DESIGNER’S STYLE, which gives a more detailed look at who I am as a designer and the reality behind my authentic and personal interior surroundings, and most importantly how I live with dominant colors. I have posted several different areas within my home, but I must say that I do love my dining room. I think I mentioned in an old post, where I stated that I get overly excited when I have a project that deals with dining rooms because it is one of my favorite areas to transform.

With that said, when I applied the paint to all the interior walls, and the ceiling, which I did lighter to create a slight variation, I didn’t feel an immediate statement as I walked past that room. Hmmm, something was still missing. So, I decided to hand paint acanthus leaves, and OMG, this was so beyond time-consuming, but as always, when I want something, I will not leave it alone until I have what I so desire. Now, with the backdrop complete, hardwood floors were installed, along with new lighting. Yikes, my vision was starting to come alive – finally! The intricate details came not only with the acanthus leaves, but a stylish rope detail is in place, which lines the top wainscoting. Also, where the wall ends, a tassel hangs freely to give way to a finished look.

Overall, with my dining room, I was looking for a noticeable contrast. I adore purple, as well as orange. So, it was such an easy decision to use both colors because they are so amazingly beautiful. After incorporating all the intricate details that completed the space, I am so beyond pleased with my colorful dining room.

Design Tip: When designing interior spaces, do not copy what is in the magazines or seen on television, go for the creative aspects that flow freely within your mind. Do not listen to what is necessarily considered a good or bad design. In my opinion, what is usually not seen makes for what I call great design!

Kimberly C. Lyons

Kimberly C. Lyons is the founder and principal interior designer of KCL-IDESIGN, LLC (Interior Design Studio). She has been slaying interiors since forever and refuses to be known as the norm when transforming spaces. With an intense passion for incorporating a wow factor to anything ordinary, Kimberly acknowledges that she is a rare breed, and enjoys splashing her signature touch throughout when designing.

However, she is incredibly obsessed with extremely bold colors, captivating art, unique decorative objects, modern architecture, and lives for going outside the box and breaking outdated design rules. The motivating words – I dare you – keeps her motivated and overcharged. Her passion for interior design comes from a deeply rooted philosophy, which is – designing from within; from the soul, and it is always about living, breathing, and loving interior design!

Besides being a crazed football chick who is also addicted to chocolate, Kimberly is a global traveler who adores modernism and is always inspired by the not so beautiful objects.

She lives accordingly by her motto: I live – breathe – love interior design.
