SIMPLE POWDER ROOM DESIGN: BOLD & MODERN
/DESIGN PROJECT: APPLETON LANE RESIDENCE
DESIGN PROJECT LOCATION: MAULDIN, SC
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO: KCL-IDESIGN, LLC
PRINCIPAL DESIGNER: KIMBERLY C. LYONS
PROJECT GOAL: To incorporate the perfect color palette and show that modern design is even more beautiful when various colors compete for attention.
PROJECT OUTCOME: A modern approach with a simple, classic appeal.
It took a long time to decide whether to share this design project. The main reason is that I prefer to show the overall transformation before and after. However, it will require the ability to visualize, as photos are lost. The creative assets I use to inspire when designing always bring pure excitement as a designer. One obsession that continually fuels my passion for design is the dominance of color. Viewing what a lifeless room looks like before and after, in various colors, is a powerful tool for motivating someone afraid to use color to jump-start their long-awaited projects. I aim to provide a much-needed boost to get the process underway.
Moreover, imagine a completely white room with only a sink, a toilet, and a small square mirror, typically found in new houses. Nothing in this space is exciting; it needs character, interest, style, and appeal until I discovered my love of squares.
Five colors are featured, but there are six. I incorporated leftover black paint from another project, which helped create depth and add weight throughout the space. I employed a drip technique to achieve a textured effect during the painting process. Accents of white and black create a subtle contrast against the detailed backdrop. Also, simple decorative objects are placed sparingly, such as the chrome magazine rack and the curly decorative branches.
