A DESIGNER'S STYLE: DETAILED DINING ROOM

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Kimberly C. Lyons

ENHANCED AREA: Dining Room

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: My home's style says a lot about who I am, and therefore, the design is always an honest, authentic, and accurate reflection of who occupies the space.

Okay, by now whomever I have encountered over the years, should already know that my actual DNA is a mixture of extreme bold colors. However, it is hilarious because when I am in a discussion dealing with this extraordinary element; of course, I get asked on how I feel about neutral or white color palettes? In my defense, I have designed a lot of them, and besides as a designer, if I am dealing with a client that has no desire for anything extreme when dealing with color, it is my job to make sure that I give them precisely what they envision for their home. What can I say? It is my job, and I am damn good at it. Moreover, I do post about interiors that are neutral because as a designer I cater to all, and I do understand that everyone is not like me – Kimberly C. Lyons, who could not live in a house that is not screaming some major drama!

Furthermore, since I deal with a variety of clients, I do understand why I cannot post only about bold interiors. So, I started A DESIGNER’S STYLE, which gives a more detailed look at who I am as a designer and the reality behind my authentic and personal interior surroundings, and most importantly how I live with dominant colors. I have posted several different areas within my home, but I must say that I do love my dining room. I think I mentioned in an old post, where I stated that I get overly excited when I have a project that deals with dining rooms because it is one of my favorite areas to transform.

With that said, when I applied the paint to all the interior walls, and the ceiling, which I did lighter to create a slight variation, I didn’t feel an immediate statement as I walked past that room. Hmmm, something was still missing. So, I decided to hand paint acanthus leaves, and OMG, this was so beyond time-consuming, but as always, when I want something, I will not leave it alone until I have what I so desire. Now, with the backdrop complete, hardwood floors were installed, along with new lighting. Yikes, my vision was starting to come alive – finally! The intricate details came not only with the acanthus leaves, but a stylish rope detail is in place, which lines the top wainscoting. Also, where the wall ends, a tassel hangs freely to give way to a finished look.

Overall, with my dining room, I was looking for a noticeable contrast. I adore purple, as well as orange. So, it was such an easy decision to use both colors because they are so amazingly beautiful. After incorporating all the intricate details that completed the space, I am so beyond pleased with my colorful dining room.

Design Tip: When designing interior spaces, do not copy what is in the magazines or seen on television, go for the creative aspects that flow freely within your mind. Do not listen to what is necessarily considered a good or bad design. In my opinion, what is usually not seen makes for what I call great design!

Kimberly C. Lyons is the founder and principal interior designer of KCL-IDESIGN, LLC (Interior Design Studio). She has been slaying interiors since forever and refuses to be known as the norm when transforming spaces. With an intense passion for incorporating a wow factor to anything ordinary, Kimberly acknowledges that she is a rare breed, and enjoys splashing her signature touch throughout when designing.

However, she is incredibly obsessed with extremely bold colors, captivating art, unique decorative objects, modern architecture, and lives for going outside the box and breaking outdated design rules. The motivating words – I dare you – keeps her motivated and overcharged. Her passion for interior design comes from a deeply rooted philosophy, which is – designing from within; from the soul, and it is always about living, breathing, and loving interior design!

Besides being a crazed football chick who is also addicted to chocolate, Kimberly is a global traveler who adores modernism and is always inspired by the not so beautiful objects.

She lives accordingly by her motto: I live – breathe – love interior design.

A DESIGNER'S STYLE: ART INSPIRED HALLWAY

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Kimberly C. Lyons

ENHANCED AREA: Hallway/Foyer

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: My home's style says a lot about who I am, and therefore, the design is always an honest, authentic, and authentic reflection of who occupies the space.

I often find myself reminiscing on my childhood because not only was it a fantastic part of my life, but it is a part of my life where my love for color, drawing, and painting began. At that time, my brain was bursting with extreme creativeness. Even though I was a youngster, I had a good idea as to what I was going to contribute to this gigantic world. It may not have been stable enough at that time because I was only a child, but I could see my vision clearly, and I knew that without a shadow of a doubt that it would deal with transforming and extreme color. So, with that said, there is no question as to why I make sure both are a dominant factor daily.

Sometimes I feel as if color follows me, it is my shadow; it is my visual road map, which resonates and affects me emotionally – it is my DNA – Kimberly C. Lyons.

Years ago, once again, I questioned myself – interior designer or canvas artist, who shall I indeed become? Both deal with extraordinary color palettes, statement-making, can transform people and their surroundings, and become an ultimate masterpiece once completed. It was a relatively easy decision for me because I chose both, and with that said – I have never looked back or regretted incorporating two specific elements that define significant portions of my character and who I am as an individual with a gifted and creative soul. So, when using color to inspire through my artwork, my passion is surpassable.

However, the short story above, which was the beginning of my life-long foundation, truly helped me to solidify my art inspired hallway. I am beyond obsessed with artwork that screams extreme boldness, contrast, daring, drama, and a wow factor! Art –  it is a must-have throughout my surroundings. Moreover, everyone and that includes clients are not always into such extreme details. Trust me, I get that people are different, but how can one ignore an element that is extraordinary and compelling such as color? It will be impossible for me ever to understand.

A DESIGNER'S STYLE: CALMING AND SERENE STAIRWAY

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Kimberly C. Lyons

ENHANCED AREA: Stairway

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: My home's style says a lot about who I am, and therefore, the design is always an honest, authentic, and accurate reflection of who occupies the space.

When it comes to using subtle, intricate details to make a dominant statement, OMG – I am all game! I mean, I am a chick who appreciates and admires an aesthetically pleasing interior, and not to mention standing afar to catch a view of my well-designed rooms. With that said, it does not matter if it is my kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, hallway, office, or whatever area of my home that I am walking towards, a beautiful view is always transcending. However, I must tell one of my many secrets. Sometimes on the weekend, if I decide to stay cuddled in bed a tad bit longer than usual, I get to enjoy the fantastic view of my stairway, which is directly in front of my bedroom. Yikes – I find myself realizing the smile on my face is crazy big!

Moreover, when I stress that a home should have objects that bring happiness, this is a perfect example of why I wake up and smile because the view of my unique Buddha heads leading down my stairway makes me extremely happy!

When we decided to have our house built, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that there was going to be a stairway because I am obsessed with stairs. I have always been fascinated with structures that feature architectural details. Furthermore, I knew that when I decided to design the space – it had to reflect who I am and objects that define my style. Also, when it came to the interior wall, which is tall as far as height, I knew that I was going to do something over-the-top and time-consuming. So, I decided to incorporate three different paint colors. I made sure that some of the paint continually dripped and dried in place. I call it my very own drip technique. I enjoyed seeing the decorative coating intertwine and create something unique. I must say that it turned out amazingly beautiful!

When designing this small area in my home, it did not require a lot. I needed to make sure there was enough character, and it had to become a significant part of my overall house. When I take my stroll either up, down or standing at the top or bottom to see the different elements that make this area calm and serene, I see a reflection of a designer's style.

Photo 3: The banister has a beautiful texture done with plaster and bright white paint.
