DESIGN PROJECT: CREEK SHOALS RESIDENCE

PROJECT GOAL: The client felt intimidated by color but wanted to add an accent wall. We both decided on a more toned-down color that would be warm and inviting, contrast with the existing wall color, and become a focal point within the room.

PROJECT OUTCOME: The client was pleased with how the color transformed her sitting room. So, I acquired two other design projects within her home, both of which involved a decorative coating.

No one will ever understand how I truly feel about color except for my mother and father. But, OMG, let me break it down about my crazed obsession. I remember being fascinated and inspired by Play-Doh and Crayola Crayons as a child. Both have a place in my office as my daily inspiration because they significantly influenced me as a child. The bright colors affected me tremendously, and even though I deal with color daily, I am always intrigued by how it can transform a room entirely. Being obsessed with color isn't new to me, which is one of the main reasons I love splashing it throughout when designing. However, when I deal with a client who might be intimidated by using color, I am even more excited about the challenge!

Moreover, there are two crucial factors that I like to make sure a client understands when dealing with an extraordinarily bold, vibrant, subtle, or any color. Both are discussed in detail with the client during the consultation.

1) Applied color – the overall effect within the room and other elements such as decorative objects, furniture, patterns, textures, finishes, and natural and artificial light.

2) The psychological effect on each occupant.

Now, here comes the fun part. One of my favorite ways to use color, whether bold, vibrant, or subtle, is by utilizing it as a backdrop. Each room's elements become a solid foundation, complete the space, and bring everything together cohesively. Second, applying color creates a more aesthetically pleasing interior. When I meet a client who is afraid of using color but is willing to experiment for the first time, I am overly excited to show them how vital having color is to make any space come alive.

There is nothing like an accent wall to pull a room together. The most massive wall, parallel to the windows, is used as a backdrop, impacting the entire space. The fireplace is a focal point facing two perfectly styled windows with high drapery, creating balance and symmetry. Adding unique decorative objects, artwork, and an area rug helps pull the space together.
